Whipping Through Wednesday
Couple of quick notes:
- In this week's installment of "Generating Heat For The Sake Of Getting My Name Out There," Jeff Owens over at NASCAR Scene throws out the summation that Kyle Busch is on his way to becoming one of the all-time NASCAR greats or reasonable equivalent thereof. Um, could we wait a few years for a few years of runs like the one he's currently on before the coronation? Ryan Newman was called the next coming of the second coming after winning eight races in 2003. How's it gone for him since then? Then again, Joey Logano was hailed from most all corners as a legend before he set one foot in a Nationwide car, so jumping the gun is hardly unique to Owens.
- The talk that Mark Martin will make one more final run at the title in 2009 by taking over the #5 from Casey Mears is interesting, but at the same time a tad puzzling. According to what he said at the time, the primary reason Martin stepped back last year to a part-time schedule was to start racing for fun as his career wound down. And now he wants to get back in the pressure cooker? Granted, Martin has had a lot of trouble making up his mind over the past few seasons, publicly torn between wanting to let it go and wanting to finally grab the brass ring. But after a year and a half of no concerns except how he did in that day's race, to suddenly want it again bad enough -- and also noting how Hendrick has been bedeviled by the new car this year -- seems odd. Until we hear it from the man himself, the inclination is to file this under wait and see.
