While Indianapolis is hallowed ground for all things auto racing, for NASCAR it's anything but optimal.  Too long, very little banking.  Ah well.  Perhaps magic will happen anyway.

The main issue going into the race is the horrific tire wear seen yesterday.  NASCAR has already declared there will be a competition yellow at Lap 10 (!) and has trucked in a bunch of tires that were already delivered to Pocono for the next race there in case they're needed.  If I'm reading the info correctly, each team has been given an extra sets of tires.  Probably won't be enough.  Hopefully this won't be an issue in the race, but it's well nigh impossible to see how it won't be a massive headache.  Kind of hard setting up for a long run if you have no confidence you won't suddenly be slammed into the outside wall.  Or for that matter, set up for a short run if you have no confidence you won't suddenly be slammed into the outside wall (or slammed into by someone else inside of you who just lost a tire).

Mark Martin, in a most out of character moment, predicted he would emerge victorious today.  We shall see.

Wow, today I LOVE Indy...

this is the fewest mentions of Kyle Busch since, I dunno, Daytona.

Lap 5

Oh, that Michael Waltrip. Anything to get some on-air time.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Competition yellow has been moved to Lap 14

Be interesting to see if there’s any noticeable wear on any of the sets being changed right now.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:33 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 10

And we’re back. I’d say and forth, but so far we haven’t seen a whole lot of that.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 13

Dale Jr. has moved up ten spots since the restart.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Or four.

Thought it said he was 23rd (he restarted 33rd).

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's sad to see the Petty cars driven by Labontes.

But I’d still love to see a Petty car in victory lane. If Kyle isn’t going to drive anymore, can he PLEASE annouce full time and lose Weber? Pretty please?

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 2:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Somehow, I don't think Weber is going to go anywhere.

He’s like that annoying guy at work that somehow decides that you are his buddy.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 2:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wonder what went wrong with Kurt Busch's car

So much for his and Kevin Harvick’s day.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmmm

Most cars taking on two tires only…and this is the competition caution now.

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 2:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 23

Thus far, Dale Jr.’s gamble is paying off.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 25

It’s not paying off any more (tire going down).

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 2:56 PM EDT   0 recs

worn down to the cords on the right rear

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 2:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Drivers seeing the tires wearing out on track

has got to be nerve wracking. Who is thinking about racing when everyone is bracing himself for a sudden introduction to the wall?

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow.

That right rear off of Jeff Gordon’s car… yeesh. NASCAR might have to call more competition cautions.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:08 PM EDT   0 recs

This is turning into a joke.

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 3:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 35

How many people right now are hoping Kyle Busch blows a tire just as long as he doesn’t take anyone else out in the process?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 39

Seeing how strong Dale Jr.’s car is, once he’s back on the lead lap will he be able to work his way back up through the field in time to contend for the win?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:14 PM EDT   0 recs

Sure

As long as he gives huge offerings to Lady Luck and the Tire Gremlin

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 45

Somebody cued the duck; Carl Edwards is making his presence known.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 48

Memo to Matt Kenseth: the next time you feel a tire going down, abandon the “I’ll ride it out and see what happens” philosophy immediately.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:23 PM EDT   0 recs

What kills me is that in this day and age there are STILL radio problems

Surely there has to be a better way. Drivers not hearing spotters/crew is inexcusable.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:28 PM EDT   0 recs

And open note to NASCAR

IT IS NOT GETTING BETTER!!!!!!!!!!

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 50

Meanwhile, Kyle Busch is back in the lead.

As Mindy noted, the tire wear isn’t getting any better as the race goes on and rubber is theoretically being laid down. Unfortunately, it’s being laid down in strips which doesn’t exactly address the issue.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:31 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 51

I spoke inaccurately (yeah yeah I know what else is new). Mark Martin is in the lead courtesy of having pitted a lap before the latest competition yellow when he felt a tire going down and wisely decided to not take a chance.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:34 PM EDT   0 recs

This isn't helping attendance.

Either that or the concession stands are packed—look at all the empty seats.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:39 PM EDT   0 recs

I am told by a reliable source...

... ticket sales for this year’s 500 were definitely higher than for the 400.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 66

Competition yellow (again). Dale Jr. back on the lead lap. And I’m thinking we’re not going to be seeing a whole lot more two-tire stops.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:46 PM EDT   0 recs

If NASCAR wishes to maintain a slender thread of integrity...

... they won’t bother with anything even vaguely resembling a defense of Goodyear.

Meanwhile, those howls of laughter you’re hearing are coming from assorted executives at Hoosier and Goodrich.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:51 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm betting

Smoke will reiterate his offer to give up a month’s salary to get Hossiers into Nascar.

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 3:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

ARRGHH!

My cable is being stupid! Hopefully, I’m not missing anything (as I sit here and stare at my blue screen!!)

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 3:51 PM EDT   0 recs

There is no way NASCAR can not release the tires brought in from Pocono.

The downside is they are a different compound. Which sounds strange to say, but how the cars will handle with the different tire is a complete unknown.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 3:54 PM EDT   0 recs

I do not understand

How did NASCAR/Goodyear miss this despite… what, three years of testing the CoT?

It is getting old hearing them blame the tire issues on set-ups and weight of the car when this should not be a surprise.

by JB* on Jul 27, 2008 3:56 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 74

Well, that’s different… someone having a good old-fashioned engine issue. Sucks for Brian Vickers.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:00 PM EDT   0 recs

At this point...

Allstate may petition Nascar to rename the race the Competition Caution 400 at the Brickyard, just so they can sponsor a real race later in the year.

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 4:08 PM EDT   0 recs

Good one!

Or ask for their sponsorship money back.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Please tell me they didn't just say the tire wear is getting better...

... when we’re looking at cords from the car off Jeff Burton, who’s as smooth and non-abusive of his tires as they come.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 95

CY in two.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Aughhh

In the immortal words of Charlie Brown…............Auuuuuuuugh. Thank You Mike Helton (Mr. Obvious) This is not fun! And I just became Mr. Obvious….....sigh. Go Tony? Peace, Mike.

by rockon1974 on Jul 27, 2008 4:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Pocono tires are SOFTER?!!

Swell. This will make the last few laps even more interesting.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:31 PM EDT   0 recs

oops

bye bye birdie!

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 4:43 PM EDT   0 recs

I really wish the team owners...

... would stop saying it’s not Goodyear’s fault.

Yes it IS their fault! They brought the wrong tire!!!

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:46 PM EDT   0 recs

They first showed it during the super bowl

Janet Jackson’s nipple for like 1 zillionth of a second causes all kinds of an uproar, and this guy…..this is acceptable.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 4:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Grr.

Hello, you have reached a party line, NASCAR and Goodyear are doing everything right, attendance is up, and you are having a great time. Thank you for calling.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 4:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 115

Jimmie Johnson is stout.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 4:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 122

CY… again.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:04 PM EDT   0 recs

I know they're doing four-tire stops each time...

... but the amount of spots Jeff Gordon is losing during each CY is grating.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:07 PM EDT   0 recs

I heard...

Steve Letarte ask Gordon if their runs were because of the 4 tires or because the car is that good? I’m guessing Gordon elected to stay the course for the time being because on each run, he’s been able to charge back to the front….me thinks they’ll start taking two tires when there’s about 10 to 20 laps left….BTW, the record for caution laps is 47. We’re up to 45 already.

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 5:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I can see the headlines now...

... “Records Fall At Brickyard!”

They will avoid saying which records, mind you…

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 135

Thus far, Denny Hamlin’s two-tire change on the most recent CY is working.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 138

Penultimate CY. And doesn’t “penultimate” sound like a word that should be more high-powered than meaning ‘second to last?’

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:26 PM EDT   0 recs

So did the pace car get the most laps led bonus?

and I’m wagering on a wreck really soon—the drivers are getting bored and restless.

by MindyL78 on Jul 27, 2008 5:31 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 142

WHOA! Easy there, Carl and Jimmie.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:31 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 150

This last caution will be when every crew chief either earns or forfeits their pay.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Checkered Flag (FINALLY!!!)

Whew! At least those last laps were intense. Way to go Jimmie!

by Diecast Dude on Jul 27, 2008 5:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Well

At least a Hendrick car won

by Gravypan on Jul 27, 2008 5:52 PM EDT   0 recs

He didn't win, but I'll take it.

He finished in front of Kyle Busch. That makes my day.
