Two pre-race questions: is fewer commercials equaling more Bill Weber really much of a trade-off?  And is everyone as sick of Coke Zero plugs as I am?

See you in the comments area.

Final pre-race thought...

... wow, those stands are empty.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 2

And they’re already in parade mode up front? Swell.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Your answers Mr. Dude.

No. it isn’t a trade off, give me the commericals, and the Coke Zero plugs were old months ago.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Hello Ms. Mindy!

How are you doing this Saturday evening?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not too bad

Mute button is getting a work out, and I am craving pizza. How are things with you? Did you have a nice 4th?

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You want pizza too, huh?

Don’t have a Papa John’s nearby, alas. We do have a place in town named Pyzano’s that’s owned by a guy who’s won a bunch of pizza dough twirling and throwing contests along with pizza bake-offs. Best pizza I’ve ever had. Ever.

4th was pretty good. Went to the brother in law’s for some barbecue and general hanging out. Yours?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

After the initial annoyance of dumb family members...

It didn’t go too bad. Had a picnic in a park, enjoyed the evening, and watched the fireworks.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, but

I think there was a typo on my allotment sheet, I have spares.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 5

Quote from Wally Dallenbach: “Unlike Talladega, this track is so rough I don’t know if you’ll be able to bump-draft in the corners.”

Don’t worry. Kyle Busch will try it anyway.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 11

Oh good, Jon Wood is back on the track. I was so worried.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:29 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 14

My dream: just once, I’d like to see a race where the beginning isn’t filled with “Jeff Gordon is complaining about his car” comments. Just once.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:32 PM EDT   0 recs

It happened.

Just in his rookie season.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

(sigh)

You’re quite right.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

As for the empty stands

everyone is waiting for the Pepsi machines to get restocked.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 21

Caution courtesy of A.J. Allmendinger (blown right front). Meanwhile, Dale Jr. has taken the lead. The Junior Nation is currently drowning out all the leftover fireworks from yesterday.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow...

... what was with all the smoke off of David Ragan’s car?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:39 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 23

Meanwhile, back at the race Smoke has made a second pit stop (may we find out why, please?). Kyle Busch came out of the pits first. The Junior Nation is warming up their beer can-throwing arms just in case.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:42 PM EDT   0 recs

And now it's "oh, he came in only once."

Hoo boy. What race are these guys watching?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

"The all-new highly anticipated season of 'Saving Grace' starts MAY 14th"

Um… did I skip ahead on the calendar? Could have sworn it was July…

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Me too.

Especially with all of the Independence Day celebrations and ceremonies

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 27

“This portion of TNT’s wide open coverage is brought to you by Viagra.”

Oh goody. Now we can learn that all it takes for your attractive neighbor to put out is you buying a motorcycle. Or something like that.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:49 PM EDT   0 recs

I think they are supposed to be married.

But I do have to laugh about one aspect of the Viagra thing. All the announcer guys to is say “this is sponsored by Viagra” they don’t do a recap or a tagline. Just an awkward pause.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Viagra.

right up there with Coke Zero and Weber.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 29

Gee… this is almost beginning to resemble a race at Daytona, with multiple lines and passing and stuff.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 32

Any truth to the rumor Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson are currently singing a duet of “Stuck In The Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel?

(And if you remember that, I wouldn’t admit it either.)

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:53 PM EDT   0 recs

oh man

Now I’m singing that! Thanks a lot Mr. Dude!

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just remember...

... I remember when it first came out in 1973! (sigh)

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Stuck in the Middle With You

That song was playing in that scene in Resevoir Dogs when Mr. Blonde cut the cops ear off. I love that movie.

by Bobbleheaded on Jul 5, 2008 9:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 38

Dale Jr. back in the lead. The Junior Nation does the happy dance.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 41

A 90 second reprieve from Bill Weber! WOO-HOO!

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 8:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 43

I do confess to enjoying the ads for ‘Saving Grace.’

I know, I know, typical Y chromosome carrier.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:01 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 44

For Rocket Man, this season can’t end soon enough. And what was Jamie McMurray thinking out there?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

That concrete is a life saver

but where are the inside safer walls?

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Very good question

Granted, having the asphalt there instead of all grass cuts way down on potential flips. But still…

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow!

Weber can do simple math. Too bad he can’t speak simple English as well.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:05 PM EDT   0 recs

No.

I just want him to go away.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Soon the races will be on ABC/ESPN...

... and then we get Rusty Wallace, maybe (hasn’t been on the air much the past few Nationwide races).

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well he's better than Weber.

But I’m not much for him either. The chemistry just doesn’t seem to be there between him and the other guys.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 47

Okay, what happened to Menard?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:07 PM EDT   0 recs

LOL

Gotta love Larry Mac!

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 52

Gordon and Johnson have finally hooked up.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Hey 3rd and 6th

Not too bad. (for once)

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 62

Don’t you love Johnson and Knaus having this calm analytical discussion…

... at 180 miles per hour?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:21 PM EDT   0 recs

You should listen to them on Race Scanner. They’re frickin’ hilarious sometimes.

Jimmie: It smells like cotton candy in here.
Chad: I put some under your seat in case you get hungry.

by Bobbleheaded on Jul 5, 2008 9:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 70

Oh goody. The Nashville Viagra ad with the unspeakably creepy studio musicians.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 71

Well, that sucks for Greg Biffle. Not really Montoya’s fault, though.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:27 PM EDT   0 recs

wow

Tony is coming out.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:29 PM EDT   0 recs

No kidding.

He looked ok in pre-race stuff though. Man, he’s been sick a lot this year.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 73

I’m amazed they didn’t have the Big One on pit road. That was a mess. Methinks NASCAR will issue a blanket warning to everyone about how they leave the pits from now on.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 77

The Hendrick boys are putting on a show!

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:36 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah, but look

Kyle Busch is right there with them. That could be REALLY ugly.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, I know...

... 79 more laps of nervous time.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 79

Okay, they can call the race right now. ;-)

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:38 PM EDT   0 recs

I don't care how many times they run that HP ad...

... my next computer is going to be a Mac.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:39 PM EDT   0 recs

LOL!

My comments are brought to you by HP.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

But I do admit

I love the Mac / PC ads. Justin Long (and that other guy, what’s-his-name) crack me up!

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 83

And you couldn’t interrupt the commercial to tell us what’s going on with Kyle Busch why?

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:41 PM EDT   0 recs

Because

they are nascar, they are never wrong and don’t ask to see the rulebook either!

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m so sick of Mark Martin. Freakin’ retire already.

by Bobbleheaded on Jul 5, 2008 9:46 PM EDT   0 recs

Mr. Dude....

is currently in a local ER getting oxygen ‘cause Gordon is actually leading.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 9:51 PM EDT   0 recs

Young'uns...

... no respect for their elders these days (sigh).

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 9:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What?

I’m just sayin’. It’s been a while. Even if Elliott DID turn traitor and get engaged, if he wins I’ll be flipping out for hours!

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 10:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

WTF is wrong with Jimmie tonight?! facepalm

by Bobbleheaded on Jul 5, 2008 9:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Lap 114

And we’re back. Business, as the say, is picking up.

by Diecast Dude on Jul 5, 2008 10:14 PM EDT   0 recs

For some.

Others are closed for repairs.

by MindyL78 on Jul 5, 2008 10:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lap 117

Did Gordon and Johnson have a falling out?

by
