Special K

Starting this post with wholesale replication of a recent post by Charlie Turner:

It is reported that Rick Hendrick has offered Jimmy Johnson and lifetime contract with his Hendrick Motorsports organization.

Not a bad gig there Jimmy.  Merry Christmas.  You earned it but the following quote found on Scene Daily makes it sound like it's not a done deal.  Jimmy reportedly said.....

"This is home to me.  Hendrick Motorsports is home to me.  I don't need a lifetime contract to say that.  I know where my home is.  I know where I want to drive and who I want to work for.  I have a contract through 2010.  And after that we'll figure out what is in store for us for the future.  But this is home for me.  It's family, it's great."

Does that sound like "Hell yes! Sign me up!" to you?

Whatever - that's not the point that I want to make.  What I'm looking at is Dale Earnhardt Jr.

If Johnson signs his lifetime deal - that would put both Jeff Gordon and Jimmy under the same contractual umbrella and that's fine.  Good for everybody involved.  Junior is a different deal.

For one thing, Jr just joined the team and hasn't run a race for HMS.  Success on the track is expected - how much is yet to be seen.  Wins and championships on pace with the #24 and #48 teams will be awfully tough to achieve though.

The other thing I see is the conflict that exists between DEJI - that is Dale Earnhardt Junior Inc. (not to be confused with TEI) - and the Hendrick marketing machine.  As big as Johnson is with his two straight Cup titles, his popularity still pales compared to Gordon's.  And even Jeffy isn't in Junior's ballpark.  Dale Earnhardt Junior is Jeff Gordon without the Haters, when it comes to selling stuff.

So if, down the road, Junior piles up wins and Sprint Cup Championships to an extent that Mr. Hendrick might feel tempted to offer up the same lifetime deal, I wonder how it would go.  With Junior - DEJI - it would be more of an offer of merger - and a totally different reality.  I don't see it working.  Mostly, I don't see the Earnhardt's advantage there.

Even with all of the mutual respect and admiration expressed by Mr. H and Jr, their relationship within HMS may always be different than that between Hendrick, Gordon and Johnson.  There's nothing wrong with that.  But will it affect long term performance on the track?

So, is Dale Jr. getting/going to get second-class treatment at Hendrick because he probably will never get the lifetime deal Jeff Gordon and everything but signed on the dotted line Jimmie Johnson have?

No, and here's why:

Dale Jr. was family to Rick Hendrick long before he was an employee.  That doesn't necessarily trump Hendrick's relationship with Gordon and Johnson, but it definitely ensures he'll never be thought any less of and never be treated as any a lesser.  And Hendrick is no dummy.  He knows if he can lay the foundation for Dale Jr. to win a championship... do I really need to detail how big that would be?

Also, remember when Hendrick signed Dale Jr. he didn't get "just" a driver, even if said driver is the most beloved figure in all of NASCAR bar none.

He also got some Special K.

As in Kelley Earnhardt Elledge.

In addition to a sister's fierce love and protection for her baby brother (which from personal experience I know is a wonderful thing to have), on the business side of things Kelley has her father's horse sense plus the street smarts to know what she doesn't know followed by setting out to learn it.  Add this to discernment on who to trust (i.e. Hendrick -- choke on it, haters), and you have someone you want on your side whenever the business of business is involved.  Plus someone who would never let her brother play second fiddle.  'Nuff said about that.

Another factor not to be discounted is the sad one further uniting Hendrick and the Earnhardts: family loss.  In the latter's case it's meant confronting the unhealed divisions between children and stepmother.  As to Rick Hendrick, it means even greater pain, having lost the son who was the heir to Hendrick Motorsports.

With that all said, consider this possible scenario:

  • One year, Dale Jr. announces the following will be his last full season in Cup.
  • Hendrick sets it up so he can drive the #3 the year after his last full year in Cup, cherry-picking which races he wants to run (think Mark Martin's current arrangement).
  • Dale Jr. is of course with Hendrick throughout, his arrangement with Richard Childress something of a lend-lease program.
  • Afterwards, the day comes when Rick Hendrick announces he's stepping back as head of Hendrick Motorsports and handing it off to the best qualified person for the job...
  • Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, with Dale Jr. working things in the competition department.  (He's not getting all that seat time running teams at JR Motorsports for nothing, folks.)

Obviously there would be plenty of emotions involved with Dale Jr. and Kelley permanently walking away from DEI.  But while breaking up is hard to do, sometimes it's best for all invoved.

So, as I say at the office possibly even more frequently than "but I digress," let us review.  A different relationship between Hendrick and Dale Jr. than between Hendrick and Gordon/Johnson?   Yes.  However, in this case, different definitely doesn't mean lesser.  It means everyone involved enjoys the benefit of Rick Hendrick recognizing and incorporating talent.  Going forward Casey Mears will have Kellogg's on his car, but everyone at Hendrick will reap the reward of having Special K in the house.

Hmm
That is another way that it could go. I just don't see Mr. Hendrick jumping Junior over Gordon.  And the Kelly thing may depend on what becomes of JR Motorsports. Do the younger Earnhardts have a vision for that company along the lines of a DEI? Time will tell, but in all of these scenarios, Jr and Jimmy Gordon are kind of on different planes at HMS.

Funny...
I see "Special K" as the main reason there is no longer a DE at DEI. She, and her brother, didn't get their way and didn't get their hands on the business their father and Teresa built so they took their ball and ran away.

I hate to imagine what "Special K" will do if/when Dale doesn't have the success that Jimmie & Jeff have and what Rick will do when she starts trying to dictate to him how to run his organization like she tried to dictate to Teresa how to run hers.

Well I see it a different way...
If you knew you were bringing in a whole lot of money from sponsors and other appearances Teresa has you doing yet your company that your father founded is not staying ahead of the game.

When your owner said she is not pursueing speed like the other owners (i.e. Wall Street Journal) and is more concerned about the marketing aspect in bringing in more money. Is it a wonder that they wanted more of a control since Teresa by her own words was not interested in making sure they had what they needed.

Special K got what she wanted which was an organization that knows what it takes to win a championship, the ability to do whatever it takes and also the finances to and support from Chevy. Why would Kelley tell Rick anything Jr has a good enough relationship with Rick to ask for what he needs. I just don't see the same issues. If there is an issue he will be on top of it. HMS is about racing and competiting that was what they wanted to do since Teresa by her own admission is not her priority.

Kelley is the one that makes suggestions and can make it happen but Jr makes the decision.

Not staying ahead of the game?
How is landing their "second" driver Martin Truex Jr. in the Chase, not staying in the game?

Menard is a wash either way you look at it but Junior was the one not holding up his end of the bargain there.

Taking the engine failures into consideration, there was a problem there. However, RCR is equally as responsible as DEI is in that equation and RCR also had their fair share of failures. Yet they managed to land all three of their drivers in the Chase.

Hmm...

Anyways, I agree with Charlie on this one. There ain't no way Junior holds the same weight at HMS that Jimmie & Jeff do and, as soon as that becomes apparent to Junior & Kelley, this little love-fest between "the father who lost his son" and "the son who lost his father" will be so over.
