Playoffs, And Why NASCAR Doesn't Actually Have Them

One of the main focal points zeroed in on whenever the Chase is brought up is how it's a post-season, which is always more exciting than the regular season. The latter is true. However, the Chase is not the playoffs, nor can it be.
Case in point: tonight I'll be at Gave Seven of the Sharks-Flames series. Whoever wins advances to the next round of the playoffs, whoever loses... see you in September at training camp. Simple. Utterly nervewracking for the fans, but still simple.
You can't have that in racing, unless you want only two cars running around the track. Wouldn't that be exciting... um, actually, no. It only works in drag racing.
In theory you could set the Chase up to where in each successive race, the driver who finished worst was eliminated until the final race where only two drivers remained in contention for the title. Given racing's fickle nature, this would bring up all kinds of single mistake or part failure or being in the wrong place at the wrong time scenarios. Don't see NASCAR going that route, though.
So no, the Chase is not the playoffs, nor can it be. Tonight is the playoffs. Breathing will resume afterwards.
