[Open Thread] Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway
And here we go with another Saturday night special. Can Dale Jr. end the drought? Can Greg Biffle notch his first win of the year? Who will Kyle Busch run over? Will anyone be able to pass anyone? The possibilities are endless... just like references to Digger.
Back in a bit.
Lap 92: Sorry about being so late. Doesn't look like I've missed much.
Lap 104: This could use a caution.
Lap 112: Oooh! A pass for the lead! Pit stops forthcoming.
Lap 127: I suppose that clip of Biffle by Kyle Busch was called for... (/sarcasm off)
Lap 140: After Kyle Busch's latest whine, do you think his pit crew is going to be all that pumped for the next stop?
Lap 141: If I just heard the chatter between Steve Letarte and Jeff Gordon correctly, the #18 has to come back in for a pit road violation.
Lap 148: They're not exaggerating... that was a brutal hit by Kevin Harvick.
Lap 158: The Biff is buff. On the track, anyway.
Lap 178: Um... Saturday night sleeper at the moment.
Lap 187: Truex is catching Biffle bit by bit. Pit stops once again forthcoming.
Lap 218: So will Kyle Busch wear out his car before he gets back up front? Which would be such a shame... noreallyImeanthat...
Lap 226: Um... y'know, I'm sorry that Darlington lost the Labor Day race, okay? Believe me, after going to last year's 115 degree roaster oven last September, I'd gladly swap tonight's date for Labor Day.
Lap 235: Well, that sucks for Greg Biffle. On a completely unrelated note, it's currently 74 degrees in Fontana.
Lap 240: This just in: there's an ad for a spotter position on the Red Bull site.
Lap 250: Now why did the three main Hendrick cars stay out when everyone else came in?
Lap 259: Kyle Busch is on a tear. Thrillsville.
Lap 274: So can anyone stop Kyle Busch? Other than himself, of course.
Lap 279: I am assuming everyone will still need one more pit stop beside the one now taking place...
Lap 291: Way to hold that lead, Jeff... (sigh)
Lap 312: Kyle Busch continues to lead, but he's not running away with it.
Lap 328: Okay, he is running away with it.
Lap 355: Nothing like Kyle Busch running away with a race to dull any desire whatsoever to comment. Because, frankly, there's not much to say.
Checkered Flag: Kyle Busch wins. Yet another round of being told we must love him. Uh, no. As in never. Ever. Period. Yes, he is a tremendous driver on a terrific roll. But he's one of the, if not the, most dislikeable drivers in the sport for his churlish pouty attitude. 'Nuff said.

I do the race updates in the story itself...
Frankly, if you're going to have a snit because there wasn't an immediate welcome mat rolled out, I'm not all that inclined to apologize. There are a lot of great people here, including a lot of Dale Jr. fans. Just because there weren't immediately a boatload of responses to you doesn't mean they're not here. Simmer down. People will respond.

It's usually a lot busier in the race thread...

Kyle "The shrub" Busch

I don't understand...
I love Kyle Busch. He’s the reason I originally started getting into NASCAR, and now that he’s been so successful it simply makes me want to watch him more. I understand he’s a bit petulant, but he’s also a 23 year old… race car driver? What is it people really expect from him in terms of personality? I’ll take an interesting kid who happens to be an incredible driver over some boring, golly gee whiz ho humble pie guy any day.
This general hate for Busch has really created the best story of the season, somehow making the best driver in 2008 into something of an underdog. Every week NASCAR nation roots against him, and there he is winning races (all kinds of races). The kid can drive.
He’s definitely my favorite racer, moreso because everyone else hates him. I’m not thrilled about everything he says, but I have a huge amount of respect for a kid who is flat out better than anyone else in the field, goes out there and handles his business, all in the face of overwhelming criticism from fans.
